Asylum / Protected Status

Asylum provides protection to individuals already in the United States who cannot return to their home country due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution. Applicants must file within one year of arrival and demonstrate persecution based on protected grounds. Asylees can apply for work authorization and may eventually adjust to permanent resident status. Withholding of Removal and Convention Against Torture protections offer additional safeguards for those who don't qualify for asylum.
